Career statement:

There are three aspects to my creative practice; Artist, Senior Designer and Senior Lecturer:

Specialising in the creation of multi-sensory, immersive, site responsive artworks that explore the exchange, relay and interrelationship between the participant and their environment to make us more aware of our embodied, environmentally dependent intertwining with the world.

A founding member of SocialCLUB, a Cardiff-based collective of creatives that include: designers, architects, artists, makers, musicians, poets, performers, etc. Each SocialCLUB collaboration looks to create unique and distinct environments that occupy the territory somewhere between architecture, art, cinema and theatre. Artworks have been shown at; Chapter Arts, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Tactile Bosch, Wales Millennium Centre and the Nottingham’s Bonington Gallery.

 

Multi-award winning Interior Architect with first-class BA(Hons) and eighteen years experience designing and administering the contracts of large-scale, prestigious design projects such as the ‘Millennium Dome’.

Specialising in the interpretation and translation of high profile design briefs into innovative, award winning design solutions. ‘Energy – Fuelling the Future’, at London’s Science Museum, received four D&AD awards and the Design Week ‘Best Exhibition Design’ award.

 

Cardiff Metropolitan University Senior Lecturer (0.7), a visiting lecturer at the University of South Wales and the Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth. Currently teaching into the WJEC 2014 FADEx award winning Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. Formerly a Senior Lecturer on the highly regarded, multi-award winning BA(Hons) Interior Architecture course at UWIC and University of Wales Moderator between 2005-09. An academic with particular interests in Consciousness, Perception and Embodiment, the PhD title is ‘Can measurement of audience response help evaluate whether an artwork conveys the artists intention?’ Current research projects explore the immersiveness of experiential reality using the perceptual structure of vision and the creation of experimental environments to engage autistic children.

A former Senior Lecturer at University of Wales Institute Cardiff (now Cardiff Metropolitan University) on the highly regarded, multi-award winning BA(Hons) Interior Architecture course, teaching 2nd and 3rd year design projects and supervising / marking final year students 10,000 word dissertations. The course won many awards including; Winner of the ‘Welsh Graduate Design Award’ at the Cardiff Design Festival 2010, Top Prize in the ‘Spatial Design’ category at London’s New Designers Show in 2008 and 2009, and the ‘FormZ Interior Design Joint Study Award’ in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

A former University of Wales Moderator between 2005-09 on the validated Interior Design course at Limerick Senior College. Overseeing the courses development over time included, ensuring the University of Wales procedures, protocols and best practice was upheld with regards; learning and teaching methods, course feedback, assessment procedures, examination process, while also overseeing the development of course timetabling, curriculum and project briefs.

Specific Senior Designer Responsibilities:

My responsibilities on the ‘Energy – Fuelling the Future’ gallery, were as follows:

Lead Designer duties included, liaising with sixteen strong client team through the various design stages, communicating with building control officer, museums estate officers, quantity surveyors and cost evaluators, coordinating with members of my design team (structural engineer, lighting designer, graphic designer, computer programmer, visualiser, etc), producing full tender package (design drawings, scope of works and specifications) and approving of main and sub-contractor (audio-visual installer, etc) construction drawings as well as being the design representative on-site.

Contract Administer responsibility required me, as head of the large design team, to organize and coordinate all aspects of running the £1,000,00.00 contract, ensuring that all the correct procedures and protocols were being followed by all parties involved throughout the project.  Duties included, organizing and chairing weekly site and progress meetings, assessing and awarding Extension of Time Claims, issuing of Contract Instructions, Interim and Progress payments, Non-Completion and Practical Completion Certificates.  In short, I oversaw every issue and all correspondence before any work, variation or monies were processed.
